Water, Air and Light

Last evening I drove into this small valley.
A low hanging cloud
wandered through the trees.
And circled like a school of fish
around the dun colored hay bales.
It reached out its foggy hands
And stroked the legs of a perfect doe
Grazing in a neighbor's mule pasture.
I stopped the car
Stepped out into the blue twilight
the wet mist brushed my face
and then it was gone.
It was not unfriendly
but not inclined
to tell it’s secrets.

I am in love with untamed things
the cloud, the doe,
Water, air and light.
I am filled with such tenderness
For ordinary things
The practical mule, the pasture
And the perfect spiral of gathered hay

I am always surprised
In the way my heart will open
So completely and unexpectedly
With an ache like cold water
on a tender tooth.
