Whether it’s a mother’s lullaby or notes of the orchestra, music can take your soul to new heights. And that’s exactly how American singer Carrie Newcomer feels every time she performs.
Carrie recently performed in a concert arranged by the American Centre and the Happy Home and National School for the Blind, Especially for the blind children and the patrons of the school. But, what pleasantly surprised Carrie was the little choir that the children for the school presented in her honor. The also dedicated their own compositions, a mix of some Bolly wood songs, to Carrie. Dressed in a Salwar Kameez, Carrie was overwhelmed and extremely happy when the children began asking her questions about music. “Music is my passion. I’ve have been writing songs since I was 13 years old. And I always strive to learn more and work harder toward making better music,” she says.
Carrie plays the guitar flute and piano “But I love performing with the guitar, “ She says. Her voice has that depth and that should quality that drives the listener to a higher plane. Music, for Carrie is more than a profession. “It’s life. Beauty is discovered in the midst of the ordinary and life is experienced in the spaces between darkness and light. For me, truth is found in the bond between music and words,” she says. She has worked with many notable artists throughout her career- she toured with Alison Krauss and union Station in Europe and the US and recorded the title track of her 2092 album The Gathering of Spirits with Krauss. Her recent album Geography of Light, like most of her work is based in folk music. One of the tracks, Leave don’t drop, The Just Let Go, is a beautifully woven song about letting go. When asked which of her own tracks she likes the most, Carrie laughs, “I like the my latest song the best.” I write my songs taking inspiration from many things, like the one about friends who remain friends in spite of not seeing one another for many years.”
