A Year of Wonder
January 5th, 2011
A year of contrasts,
Of beginnings and endings,
Completed projects and unfinished business.
A year of thresholds,
Stepping breathless and blinking
into the unknown and unformed
Light of change.
A year of longing
When we took
Before saying goodbye.
A year when we sat wordless with loss,
Nothing to do but be still,
and wait for sunrise.
A year of moments
That very nearly did us in with delight,
That left us wide eyed and grinning,
Moments gloriously suspended and hanging
In that stunned space at end of the song
Before the collective exhale of
“ahh” and “yes.”
But in all of this,
What I remember most,
Is an almost endless unfolding
Of kindness after kindness.
Kindness that was often unbidden and unexpected,
Sometimes even undeserved.
Kindness as decent and simple as soap,
Kindness humming in the kitchen,
Washing the dishes when no one asked.
Kindness that stopped by with soup
and sound advice.
Kindness large and small,
Given without reserve
When most needed.
